Our Image: Gentle Greens

This project interrogates urban spaces and emotional experiences.
Situated in an alleyway that shares the alignment with a water channel with the same width, nearly encapsulated by high concrete walls and projected roofs, which is used by the locals as a shortcut for carrying out their daily routines, the project reimagines the space as a green vessel.

The alleyway connects two densely populated neighborhoods and is located near a busy main road and a twenty-four-hour traditional market. Several houses were built with their entrances facing the alleyway. The spaces between the alleyway and the houses act as the house's porch where the residents often gather and welcome their guests. Regular passers-by and residents are likely to know each other, exchanging brief greetings when they meet, creating a rather warm interaction that is formed organically.
To support this confluence, the wish is to create an emotional dynamic between residents and passers-by. By reimagining the alleyway filled with greenery and clean water that nurtures an aquatic habitat, the space enhances the daily view of the residents, while also adding a natural soundscape that contrasts with the sounds of passers-by walking, children running, and motorbikes passing. The green vessel offers passers-by a space to breathe in and let go for two minutes or three.

The connection between the spirit of individuals and the spirit of the place fosters synergy and an interwoven interaction between the built environment and its users. To enrich the immersive experience, the project was developed through the medium of acrylic painting on a face shield, audio, and earphones that imagined the soundscape of the green alleyway: leaves rustling, water flowing, fishes swimming.
